Section 8 Housing Program

THA helps families rent houses or apartments from private landlords by paying part of the monthly rent payment. The amount of the rent that Section 8 tenants pay ranges from $5 to $400+ depending on family income and the size of the apartment.  At the time of move-in, the Participant's portion of the rent has to be at least 30% of their monthly adjusted income but no more than 40% of their monthly adjusted income.  (Click on the "Figuring Rent" button to the left, for an example.)

How do I know if I am eligible?
Standards for eligibility are established by HUD guidelines and by THA's Section 8 Administrative Plan. Once a completed and signed Preliminary Application is received at the THA Administrative Office, 2010 SE California, the family is placed on the Section 8 Waiting List.  When the family reaches the top of the Waiting List, an appointment is set with the Intake Staff to complete the full Application.

After the full Application is completed, the Intake Staff will determine the family's eligibility.  This includes, among other things:  verifying income, checking family rental history and completing a criminal background check on all adult members of the family.

Only after all of the required information has been checked, does the staff determine whether a family is eligible.
