Programs

Computer Labs
In 2004 the Topeka Housing Authority received a three year grant from HUD to establish computer labs at six complexes: Pine Ridge, Deer Creek, Tennessee Town Cottages, Tyler Towers, Polk Plaza, and Jackson Towers.

The Resident Organizations at these complexes have assumed responsibility for the operation of these labs and for the maintenance of their computer equipment and software.  The mix of computer programs and training offered at each complex varies depending on the needs and interests of residents there.

 Services at Elderly/Disabled Programs
In 2005 HUD awarded the Topeka Housing Authority a three year grant to provide three special services for elderly persons and persons with disabilities at Tennessee Town Cottages, Tyler Towers, Polk Plaza, and Jackson Towers.

Housekeeping assistance is available on a sliding fee scale for residents of these complexes who have difficulty maintaining their apartment in a way that meets HUD health and safety standards.

A van takes elderly and disabled persons on shopping trips to area grocery and retail stores on a regularly scheduled basis.  The cost to residents is $1 per round trip.

Grant funds are used to provide a variety of health and wellness programs and activities.  Resident Organizations assist in the design of these programs, and the programs offered at the four complexes vary.  Examples include water exercise classes, ceramic classes, chair aerobics, financial literacy and financial management, women's discussion groups, substance abuse groups, and mental health support groups.

Heartland Shares
Heartland Shares is a program sponsored by Let's Help, Inc.  Residents of Topeka Housing Authority complexes can purchase a large box of food valued at $40 to $50 for $17 plus two hours of community service.  Shares are purchased early in the month, and food is delivered on the fourth Friday of the month.

Children and Youth Programs and Activities
Resident Organizations at Pine Ridge, Deer Creek and Western Plaza design and sponsor a variety of programs and activities for children and youth.  With the assistance of Topeka Housing Authority staff these Organizations also link children and youth a wide variety of local sports, recreation and social service programs.

Information about programs and services for residents can be obtained by calling Kelli Gullick at 357-8842 x467.
